This graffiti tag is written on one of the remaining walls of the Hyattsville Branch Library’s original location, which is being demolished to make room for a new library on the same site.
The demolition began in mid-March, each day removing a bit more of the much beloved — but outdated — library. The original location was built in 1964, and at the time had many state-of-the-art features. The new library design, which will be 40,000 square feet and include underground parking, incorporates an open floor plan and lots of window glass to improve sight lines within the reading rooms. The design also features green space, state-of-the-art technology, and sustainable design elements.
During the library’s groundbreaking, city and county officials praised the design of the new library, citing the many features for the community: a children’s area, a café, community meeting rooms, technology labs, and study rooms. The well-loved and fought-for saucer will also live on, in its new home in an outdoor reading area.
“Libraries change the community for the better, and I know that’s true here,” said Prince George’s County Councilmember Deni Taveras, during the groundbreaking ceremony.
