BY GRETCHEN BRODTMAN — Local residents have a new option for buying groceries with the opening of Price Rite May 28 in the space once occupied by Giant in the Shops at Queens Chillum.
“I truly believe something better has arrived to fill the space” said Avonridge Community Development Corporation president Imani Kazana, who attended the May 27 preview event at 3104 Queens Chapel Road. “When the Giant left our area, most were devastated” continued Kazani as they had lost “a central meeting place for neighbors to stop and share conversation”
The Price Rite chain is a family-owned company based in New Jersey with 54 other locations, mostly in the Northeast United States.
Shoppers will find a cleaner, brighter and larger space: Price Rite does not have in-store bakeries, seafood or service deli departments so the renovations added this back to the 40,000 square feet of retail space. The chain says it saves consumers money by not using any store or manufacturers’ coupons and by not issuing loyalty cards. They say their mailed advertising circulars are also less frequent than other grocers and the streamlined checkout lanes do not feature any magazines or candy to tempt shoppers with last minute purchases.
“We are just thrilled to be here” said Price Rite President Neil Duffy.
