The City of Laurel has temporarily closed Amigos Mexican Grill after separate shooting and stabbing incidents near the restaurant left five people injured during a Cinco de Mayo celebration last week.
Amigos Mexican Grill had its use and occupancy permit suspended by the city’s Department of the Fire Marshal and Permit Services effective May 8 after a sprawling Cinco de Mayo party on May 5 spiraled into a night of violence near the restaurant’s parking lot, according to a press release.
City officials said the restaurant misrepresented the event’s security plan, matters involving the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners and the intended use of the space.
“The safety of our residents, visitors, and businesses remains our highest priority,” Laurel Mayor Keith Sydnor said in the release. “The City of Laurel will continue working with our public safety and regulatory partners to ensure accountability and compliance with all City requirements.”
Three people were shot and two others were stabbed in two separate incidents during the event last week. A day later, police identified suspects in the stabbing and shooting incidents.
Shon Juan Cook Jr., 26, of Howard County, was charged in connection with the stabbing of two people. Laurel police also circulated photos of a second man who remains unidentified in connection with the shooting investigation. Both men remain at large, according to police.
