At the Sept. 21 Arts & Ales festival, there was so much beer, we couldn’t review it all ourselves. Neighbors came to our aid.
Hefeweizen, Back to Basics, Zanzibar by Kristen Gliechauf
The hefeweizen from Denizen’s is a refreshing drink to accompany a sunny day of fun. The pillowy effervescence pairs beautifully with the jiving crowd swaying to the music here at the Hyattsville Arts & Ales Festival.
The Back to Basics beer from Liquid Intrusion is anything but basic. The complexity of B2B rivals that of an Irish brewed Guinness.
Finally, to preserve my journalistic integrity and support inclusion of all libations, I must remark upon Meadworks’ Zanzibar. If you want a drink as sweet as the staff (and trust me, the staff is sweet), then you simply must try it out.
It’s Always Hazy in Hyattsville, from Franklins Brewery, by Patrick Rush
The unseasonal heat led to mild discomfort and sweaty brow. While enjoying many of the beautiful art pieces, I noticed Hyattsville legend, Mike Franklin, serving ice-cold suds. He served me a delicious, refreshing, hazy IPA that cooled me down on the spot.
African Queen IPA, from Liquid Infusion by Joel Carlson
Outstanding African Queen IPA! Great job balancing malt and unusual hop blend. Five stars! I wish the best in the future for this up-and-coming brewing force!
Birdhouse Pale Ale, from The Brewer’s Art by Katie Heller
It was great! Very smooth and refreshing — perfect for the summer to fall transition.
3 Body Solution from Maryland Meadworks by Kit Slack
I asked the Meadworks staff which of the three meads they offered at Arts & Ales tasted most like beer, and this is what I got: mead loosely named for the Chinese science fiction novel people keep recommending to me, The Three-Body Problem. Drinking mead may not solve much, but it was easier than finding my kindle tends to be. 3 Body Solution tastes like a hazy juicy IPA, crossed with an orange honey lemon cocktail. I was thirsty from standing out in a booth all day, and it went down fast, despite a surprisingly high alcohol content, 12% by volume.
