By CAMILA VELLOSO — Homicide detectives have arrested a 21-year-old man on Friday in connection with the fatal shooting on the night of March 12 in Hyattsville, the Prince George’s County police said.
Alexander Maskiewicz, of Aberdeen, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Salina Rivera, of Belcrest Road in Hyattsville. The suspect is currently being held on a no bond status, according to police.
At approximately 7:55 p.m., officers from the Hyattsville City Police Department responded to multiple calls for reported sounds of gunshots, said Lt. Chris Purvis, a spokesman for the department.
Officers found Rivera in the walkway suffering from gunshot trauma. Shortly after 8 p.m., Rivera was pronounced dead on the scene, Purvis said.
Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit took over the investigation after Hyattsville Police had secured the area, Purvis said.
The incident “doesn’t appear random,” Purvis said. The investigation remains active.
The victim’s sister, Sabrina Rivera, started a GoFundMe campaign with a $20,000 goal to help cover the funeral expenses. In just two days, over 400 people donated to the campaign, which already surpassed the initial goal and raised $22,291 as of this afternoon.
Salina Rivera was a local DJ known in the community by her stage name, “Salamander.” She was set to perform Thursday night at U Street Music Hall.
“Proceeds from tonight’s show at U Hall will be donated to Sal’s family,” the venue said in a Facebook statement.
A burial service for Rivera will be held at St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx, NY, on the morning of March 22, according to the GoFundMe campaign.
