Former Laurel resident Chandra Smith was named Ms. Wheelchair America 2024, receiving  her title in September, at the end of the week-long event in Grand Rapids celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ms. Wheelchair America pageant. Smith was featured in the January issue of The Laurel Independent after being named Ms. Wheelchair Maryland 2023.

“I am truly speechless, but I’m truly inspired by the ladies who sit behind me,” Smith said in a statement. “And, this crown represents the resilience, determination, and the spirit of the ladies … and I share this crown with them.”
