Proposed voting age change in College Park

Posted on: January 12, 2025

Community members can weigh in on Feb. 4 on a proposal to change the minimum legal voting age in College Park from 18 to 16.

The College Park City Council will hold a public hearing during its regular meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at city hall.

Councilmembers who have supported the amendment to the city charter have said that teenage voters tend to grow up to be civically engaged adults.

If the amendment passes,  College Park residents who register to vote in Prince George’s County and will be at least 16 on Election Day will automatically become registered to vote in the city.—Sharon O’Malley
