BY REBECCA BENNETT — According to the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD), authorities arrested 18-year-old Marvin Vazquez-Juarez in connection with the murder of Catherine Alvarado on New Year’s Day.  The victim was found on the Northwest Branch Trail in the 6100 block of Ager Road, which is just outside of the City of Hyattsville in unincorporated Prince George’s County.

Patrol officers with PGPD and the Maryland-National Capital Park Police Department were called for a welfare check at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 1.  They found the 20-year-old victim suffering from stab wounds when they arrived.  She was pronounced dead on the scene.  Detectives pinpointed Vazquez-Juarez as the suspect. Court documents list him with a Langley Park address.  Authorities said Vazquez-Juarez and Alvarado had previously been in a relationship.

Vazquez-Juarez is charged with first and second degree murder and was arrested on Jan. 14.  He is being held without bond and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10. at the Prince George’s County District Courthouse in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the PGPD Homicide Unit at 301.772.4925.
