BY REBECCA BENNETT — Situated on a pedestal and dressed akin to the officers he honors with a Maryland state flag at his feet, the statue Mourning Bird was unveiled on Aug. 4. It is a place where local officers and the public can pay remembrance to officers killed in the line of duty, according to the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (CDC).

Mourning Bird, painted by artist Mark Walker, reimagines a former Prince George’s County Birds-I-View statue as a blue bird that honors and remembers the fallen heroes of the Prince George’s County Police Department,” a statement by the Hyattsville CDC said.

The statue is located at Koch Auto Radiator Service, near the corner of Rhode Island Avenue and Crittenden Street.  The Hyattsville CDC said it was commissioned by Koch as a part of the Biz-Art Matchup.
