Monica Goldson, the current CEO of Prince George’s County public schools, will become one of the newest members of the state board of education following her appointment by Governor Wes Moore.

Goldson, who has a long career with the county public schools, had previously announced her plans to step down as CEO on June 30, once the school year is over.

The state board of education is responsible for setting standards and policy from preK to grade twelve, as well as reviewing and approving the Department of Education headquarters budget, the state aid to local education budget, and state-aided institutions budget before they go to the Governor’s office and the MD General Assembly.

Most members of the board are appointed by the governor and serve a four year term. A member may be reappointed once.
