Martin Mitchell is the exact type of person I would want representing me, as a self-employed person who is working hard to establish security in housing, economic mobility and solidarity with my neighbors.

My apartment building, Patuxent Place, was purchased by new owners in 2022. In the year 2023, I was notified that my rent would increase by $800 by the next month. The owners showed no concern for the housing instability and economic damage their rush to profit from their investment would cause the people from whom their profit is derived!

I reached out to trusted members of the community and was introduced to Mitchell. Thanks to Mitchell’s level-headed, pragmatic and humanely centered leadership my rent was increased by only about $57 a month. I learned I wasn’t alone and that there is a legislative pathway to protecting the actual people that our society is made up of, as opposed to prioritizing the profits of a small group of individuals who seek to capitalize from the human right to housing.

Mitchell is engulfed in every level of the community from the seniors to the small business owners. He champions the needs of the less fortunate in a way that we were taught to look for in our church leaders. His politics shows a healthy balance between supporting Laurel through a strong social safety net and fortifying Laurel’s economy through small business ownership.

I look forward to voting for Martin Mitchell as my County Council representative this June!
