Laurel youths will soon have a new curfew.

On June 11, Laurel Mayor Keith R. Sydnor issued an executive order establishing a temporary citywide curfew for individuals under age 18.

The curfew takes effect June 18 and remains in place through Sept. 8. Sydnor explained the curfew in a press release.

“Summer should be a time for young people to enjoy recreational programs, community events, and opportunities that foster growth and success,” said Mayor Keith R. Sydnor. “This curfew is one part of a broader effort to keep our youth safe, strengthen families, and ensure our community remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”

Under the curfew, it is unlawful for anyone younger than 18 to be or remain in any public place within the city between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., seven days a week.

There are exceptions to the curfew. It does not apply to juveniles who are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, returning home by a direct route within one hour following the conclusion of a school activity, religious or voluntary association activity, or public entertainment event, or traveling directly to or from work and able to provide proof of employment upon request.

The curfew will be enforced by the Laurel Police Department. If someone is found violating the curfew, officers will issue a youth field contact report and notify a parent or guardian. Once notified, the parent or guardian will be required to respond immediately to the designated location to assume custody of the youth.
