The City of Laurel has canceled its annual Fourth of July parade on Saturday because of extreme heat, but the remainder of the city’s Independence Day celebration will continue Saturday evening on a delayed schedule.

Forecasts call for temperatures above 100 degrees, with the heat index reaching as high as 110, according to the National Weather Service. City officials and the Laurel Fourth of July Committee announced Thursday that the afternoon parade would not be held because forecasts called for dangerous heat.

The celebration marks the 47th annual Laurel Fourth of July festivities as well as the nation’s 250th anniversary.

All remaining outdoor activities have been rescheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The revised schedule is:

6 p.m. — Jolly Shows Kiddie Carnival opens on Mulberry Street

6 p.m. — Family activities begin at Granville Gude Park

6 p.m. — Live music by Oracle

8:45 p.m. — Evening program, including the invocation, national anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, welcome remarks and introductions of the mayor, City Council and special guests

9:15 p.m. — Fireworks over Granville Gude Park

Officials reminded attendees that backpacks, coolers, personal fireworks and pets are prohibited in the park.

Residents unable to attend can watch coverage beginning at 5 p.m. on Laurel TV and the City of Laurel Government page.
