Hyattsville’s decades-old spring community-building and wine-drinking event was back May 2. Sean Carlson served as the new host of the party, open to all residents of the city of Hyattsville with pre-registration and a $10 fee per family.

He brought a surprise new twist to the event.

Vine crawl, originally organized by Mary Warneka, is a version of what used to be called a progressive potluck: it starts with an actual family friendly-potluck at 5pm, this year in the form of a block party on on Kennedy Street between 42nd and 43rd avenues.

Participants then split into teams, identifiable by costume theme. Each team walks a preset route to a series of volunteer hosts’ homes. It takes two dozen or so hosts to pull off a Hyattsville vine crawl. Children are generally welcome at the first two stops on the route, at 7pm and 8pm.

By the 9pm stop, as participants drop off and teams combine, children get taken home. The event ends with a dance-party, this year held in the now empty warehouse that held the Artist & Craftsman art supply store.

The big reveal

Carlson’ s new twist was the team mashups revealed at the event: the Jurassic Park team combined with the Canine team to become. . . Jurassic Bark! Glitter and Illuminati came together to form. . . . Glitteratti, of course. And Wizard of Oz plus Bros became Somewhere Over The Rainbros. Let’s go where they are going.

We here at the Hyattsville Life & Times lay down our editorial neutrality to raise our glasses to this only-in-Hyattsville community building event: See you there next year!
