At about 5:30pm on Wednesday evening, Hyattsville police reached over a fence to apprehend a suspect hiding in a backyard in the area of 43rd Ave and Queensbury, according to an resident who witnessed the arrest.
According to Hyattsville Police Department twitter, the suspect had carjacked a car and crashed it nearby at about 5:10pm before fleeing on foot into the neighborhood, resulting in heavy police and helicopter activity in the area. Around 5:20pm, police sent an emergency alert telling residents to avoid the area. They also told residents to get inside as they searched.
According to police radio, around 5pm near Ager Rd and 29th Ave, Hyattsville police identified a Toyota Carolla as a car that had been hijacked that morning. Police observed the car flee a collision with a black Honda Civic on Ager Rd at about 5:10pm. The suspect was involved in another collision on Queensbury about 5:13pm and ran from there on foot, leaving his shoes behind. He was later identified as a juvenile.
A similar incident in July led to city council discussion over policies on police safety alerts during active manhunts.
