Dec. 19, kids got their holiday shopping done, thanks to the Hyattsville Elementary School PTA, which hosted a second annual Winter Market on the half-day before students headed off for two weeks of winter break.

“It’s been a uniquely difficult year for so many of our families,” wrote PTA President Jamie McGonnigal in an email promoting the event, “and we want to bring a little light and kindness to the season. The market gives every student a chance to feel the spirit of giving and to pick out special gifts for their loved ones.”

Every child at the school received five Pride Bucks, a currency that works only at the elementary school’s winter market. Regular money is not accepted.

Businesses and community members donated the market’s inventory. Donors included Baltimore-based Smidgen Games and Mount Royal Soap, as well as larger brands including Bombas, Blue Q, and Letterfolk.

According to 2025 state data, 64% of students at Hyattsville Elementary qualify for free and reduced price meals because of limited family income.
