In local elections, every vote really does count. College Park and Laurel residents set out to elect new council members yesterday, Nov. 4.

While many candidates ran unopposed, in the contested races the ballot count is so tight that residents must wait to be sure who their new representatives are.

According to the Laurel Board of Elections webpage, Brencis D. Smith, a former council member, may have an edge over incumbent Christine Johnson in the race for the city’s one At-Large council seat, with 619 votes to 602. Mail-in and provisional ballots will be counted at 3pm today, and results will be certified tomorrow.

In College Park District 2, Holly Simmons seems likely to have secured one of two seats on the council, with 212 votes. However Christopher Gill and Kelly Jordan are only one vote apart for the second seat, 156 to 155, with late-arriving mail-in, drop-box, and certified provisional ballots left to count.
