BY KRISSI HUMBARD — The crew from Fox 5 DC took over the Shoppes at the Arts District on Friday morning for a showcase of Hyattsville. Anchors Maureen Umeh, Allison Seymour and Tucker Barnes were on hand talking with business owners, city officials and residents, and shining a spotlight on the city. Many residents showed up to watch the segment and meet the anchors.

The businesses featured included Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, Pizzeria Paradiso, Vigilante Coffee, Green Owl Design, Shagga Coffee & Restaurant, Spice 6, Carolina Kitchen, and Chez Dior. Officers with the Hyattsville Police Department, including Chief Douglas Holland, were on hand, as well as Mayor Candace Hollingsworth. Firefighters with the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department were featured in the “Firehouse Friday” segment. The Northwestern High School Marching Band, cheerleaders and dancers kept the crowd fired up in between segments.

The show’s “Hometown Hero” segment featured Gloria Felix-Thompson, a long-time Hyattsville resident and president of the Hyattsville Preservation Association. Felix-Thompson is involved in many aspects of the city and told Seymour, “If you want to be happy in a community, you have to work at it and you have to contribute to the community.” Mayor Hollingsworth acknowledged Felix-Thompson’s work with the city and presented her with a certificate from the city, saying, “You make sure that everything that is beautiful and great about our city is always on full display.”
