BY REBECCA BENNETT — Updated Wednesday, March 2 at 8:10 p.m. Repairs are still underway on a 16 inch water main that has caused a sinkhole on Hamilton Street near 38th Avenue.  The Hyattsville City Police Department has closed Hamilton Street from 38th to 39th Avenue while repairs are being made.

On Feb. 28 the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) said a crew from New Jersey with special equipment arrived to help stop water flow. They had to dig 50 feet away from the main to tap it.  As of Feb. 29, WSSC said the linestop was holding, site secure and crews were expected to return the next day to assess and begin repairs.  All affected customers had temporary water service lines put in place.

The broken water main was put into the ground in 1926, according to WSSC.

Between 5 and 9 a.m. Saturday morning, residents on local listservs reported low pressure or no water from 42nd Avenue, Nicholson Street and in parts of the Arts District, and West Hyattsville .
