On June 4, the University of Maryland Laurel Medical Center opened its doors to its first patients. With an emphasis on wellness and preventive care, the center offers a range of outpatient services, including expanded emergency services and advanced surgical care.

The new center has two operating rooms, two procedure rooms, 10 observation beds and 20 emergency department bays. There are several waiting rooms, including one for sick patients and one for children, and a small café.

A behavioral health center has its own entrance and offers emergency care and day treatment programs.

The center is not designed for trauma or extended care. Patients who require higher level of care will be stabilized at the center before being transferred to another appropriate facility, according to Gloria Oniha, UM Capital Region Health’s director of nursing and operations

The 83,742 square building replaces the UM Laurel Medical Center (formerly Laurel Regional Hospital). The older facility will be demolished later this year. A medical office building is currently under construction adjacent to the new center.
