By SOPHIE GORMAN ORIANI — On the evening of Jan. 5, the bodies of two men were recovered from behind the Sunoco gas station at 5601 Ager Road.

The Hyattsville City Police Department (HCPD) was called to assist the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) with the situation.

“When our officers got there, they [HVFD personnel] were working on those individuals,” said Acting Lt. Zachary Nemser in a Jan. 14 phone interview. “One of them was transported to a hospital and was pronounced deceased there. The other was pronounced deceased on the scene.”

“At this time, there’s no sign of foul play or trauma. We are waiting on the autopsy and toxicology reports,” said Nemser, who added that the weather had been mild enough that the deaths were unlikely to have been weather-related. “At this time, … it’s not being investigated as a homicide or anything like that.”

Nemser said that HCPD was not releasing the deceased men’s names at this time, as they were still confirming their identities and notifying next of kin. Neither person had an ID.

Nemser added that if a resident is concerned about someone who appears to be homeless or living outside, they can always call the police for a check. As well as providing safety checks, the police can offer support by supplying a list of nearby shelter locations.
