BY REBECCA BENNETT — It was pretty chilly on March 19, the morning of the 2016 Great Magruder Park Egg Hunt. That did not stop the dozen of participating families from lining up along the green ropes 20 minutes early in anticipation of the few moments kids would have to embark on the fields of eggs and candy already laid out. The Easter Bunny, in his white soft fur, could not also be deterred by the chill, and was excited to meet many children.
This year, as city staff were giving instructions in English and Spanish to make the event be as smooth and as fair as possible, a countdown to 11 a.m. started somewhere in the crowd, picked up by others, and could not be stopped. The kid crowd took off when that countdown reached zero, and in less than two minutes, the treasures had been claimed. Children who had plenty were encouraged to pass along eggs and candy to children who weren’t able to collect much.
Event volunteers included students from Northwestern High School, DeMatha Catholic High School and St. Ambrose School. Memebers of Maryland Prince Hall Mason Shelton D. Redden Lodge #139 also volunteered.
