According to the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, renovations began this week to the building next to the current firehouse that used to house the Red Cross.

HVFD says the building is being outfitted to accommodate crew quarters and facilities for use over 18 to 24 months while the new firehouse and Red Cross joint public safety facility is built.

A description, according to the volunteer fire department, of what the temporary quarters will look like:

Day to day operations will be on the first (ground) floor with kitchen facilities, day room, offices and watch desk. The second floor will include separate male and female living quarters, showers and bathroom facilities and a small lounge. The third floor, already being used by the department, includes a large training room, conference room, offices, storage and a fitness room shared with the city police department. A four-bay temporary garage will house the fleet in the back of the Red Cross lot.
