BY REBECCA BENNETT — The Shops at Queens Chillum shopping center announced it is looking for participants in free nutritional tours at the Queens Chapel Road Price Rite. Shopping center officials say the program is a collaboration between Cooking Matters and the Food and Nutrition Club at the University of Maryland.

Janine Nickel, marketing and community outreach for the The Shops at Queens Chillum, said the tour is led by a university nutrition student and will discuss ways to eat healthy on a budget while walking through the store. According to Nickel, topics include:

  • Buy more fruits and vegetables (looking at fresh, canned and frozen)
  • Compare unit prices to find bargains
  • Understand food label
  • Find whole grains
  • Stick to a budget

The program targets low-income families, but Nickel said “anyone who shops and cooks food could learn something on the tour.”

Nickel said that tours will be limited to 10 to 15 people once a month and that participants will receive a gift certificate and reusable shopping bag. She anticipates the first tour will occur in December.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating email Janine_nickel@yahoo.com.
