BY ARIELLE AMEGASHIE — The City of Hyattsville kicked off the holiday season on Dec.4 with a tree lighting in Magruder Park.  Families and friends gathered on a chilly evening to listen to holiday carols, drink hot cocoa and wait in anticipation for switch to be flipped.

Children played around the tree dashing around it with excitement in their eyes. After a chorus of “Frosty the Snowman” and “The First Noel,” City of Hyattsville Mayor Candace Hollingsworth lit the tree with two little helpers.

“This marks the season of love and good will in the City of Hyattsville,” said Hollingsworth.

Claire Cannon, a College Park resident, said she looks forward to the event all year.  “We love this event and wait every year to be able to come out and get our Christmas started once we see the tree. It may not be D.C but it’s a big deal for us,” said Cannon.

After the tree was lit, residents took the opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbors while enjoying some holiday treats and spreading holiday cheer.
