BY KRISSI HUMBARD — Dozens of residents came out for the opening day “Strawberry Soirée” at the Hyattsville Farmers Market on June 6. Many took advantage of the nutrition tour of the market and were shown what items were available, how they could be prepared, and how they fit into the USDA MyPlate schematic, which emphasizes a balanced mix of grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein at every meal. At the end of the tour, participants were given a $10 voucher to spend at the market.

Other highlights included ripe, local strawberries for sale and free ice cream cones from Mister Magic (while supplies lasted). Vendors were selling fruit and vegetables, jams, wines made in Prince George’s County, hibiscus tea and jewelry. More vendors will be added as the market season goes on, said Ellarose Preston, the city’s Wellness Programs coordinator.

A University of Maryland Extension nutrition team was on hand serving up samples of a salad made with strawberries and passing out recipe cards. A representative from the Prince George’s County Woman, Children and Infants (WIC) program was also at the market with information about nutrition services.

The Hyattsville Market runs from 3 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday, June 6 – Sept. 26, at 3799 East–West Highway. Visit hyattsville.org for more details. For vendor inquiries call 301-985-5006 or email epreston@hyattsville.org.
