BY MARIA D. JAMES  — On April 16, the smiles of parade spectators and carnival-goers were as bright as the beautiful sunny day. The annual community parade celebrating the 130th anniversary of the City of Hyattsville was held on Saturday at 11 a.m. The parade route started at Hyattsville Middle School and ended at Magruder Park.

The parade featured elected officials, fire and police units, local schools and community organizations, local businesses, bands and classic cars.  Parade participants were judged by category. The names of the winners were not immediately available at the time of publication.

In the evening, Washington, DC’s eclectic high-energy brass band, Black Masala, performed. Then, the day ended with a fireworks show.

The four-day carnival will conclude on Sunday, April 17. Sunday’s events will also include clown entertainment and community information booths.
