BY REBECCA BENNETT — Updated March 13, 2016 at 9:45 a.m.  The first Route 1 Rampage racers took off from the starting line just north of Gallatin Street on Baltimore Avenue at 7:30am on March 12.  Each race lasted 25 to 60 minutes. Competitors in the race ranged from amateur to collegiate and pro with prizes from coffee to $250.  The event was organized by the University of Maryland Cycling Team and sponsored by Hyattsville’s Arrow Bicycle.

Road blocks were set up to keep the cars clear of the bikers and many volunteers helped cars and pedestrians navigate around the course.  According to Google Maps, traffic appeared to be backed up along Route 1 during the afternoon and evening, which is to be expected given the driving restrictions.

Hyattsville residents Mary Stevenson and Nina Faye set up a vintage yard sale on the race route at the corner of 42nd Avenue and Gallatin Street.  Faye said an entire race team purchased Hawaiian shirts that were for sale.
