BY REBECCA BENNETT — Pepco has partnered up with the Arbor Day Foundation for the sixth year of the Energy-Saving Trees Program to provide 1350 free trees to customers in Maryland and Washington, DC. Since 2011, Pepco customers will have received more than 13,000 free trees, according to a press release.
Trees, which will be directly delivered to customers, are first being made available first to those who were waitlisted last year. Pepco customers can request up to two free trees by visiting www.arborday.org/pepco , or by calling 1-855-670-2771. Choices include Eastern Redbud, Crepe Myrtle, River Birch, Red Maple, Northern Red Oak, and are in small containers that allow for the growth of a better root system. The trees are between 18 and 36 inches, according to Pepco.
According to a press release, the Arbor Day Foundation calculated that the 1,350 trees given away this year will produce nearly $294,720 in energy savings within 20 years.
