By GRETCHEN BRODTMAN — Preparedness is the key to safety. That’s why January’s Movin’ With the Mayor is a free three-part series focusing on realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance, while progressing toward the basics of hands-on defense training.

The Movin’ with the Mayor series began in 2015 and has offered classes ranging from Thai Chi to Hip Hop Dance to Yogalates. There’s even been a bike ride and Internal Fitness Training with a breathe master.

This month’s series came about after Mayor Candace Hollingsworth heard concerns about safety.

“I am elated to be able to offer this course under the Movin’ with the Mayor series. I asked to schedule a self-defense course after noticing the increased concern of residents — particularly, women — of safety on the trails and near metro,” Hollingsworth said. “Ellarose Preston, the city’s wellness coordinator, and Corporal Jimmy Denault jumped at the opportunity to offer a R.A.D. course to our residents. I am hopeful that this can be a regular offering.”

The series, which started Jan. 16, continues tonight (Jan. 23), and Jan. 30, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., at the Hyattsville Municipal Building, 4310 Gallatin Street. RSVP to Ellarose Preston at epreston@hyattsville.org or (301) 985-5006.
