BY MARIA D. JAMES — Updated at 3:58 p.m.  Today Maryland State Governor Larry Hogan signed an executive order to declare a state of emergency in anticipation of Snowstorm Jonas, which has already begun to impact the Mid-Atlantic region. Forecasters are predicting this potentially historic storm could bring up to two feet of snow and blizzard-like conditions. By declaring a state of emergency this authorizes Maryland agencies to identify and position resources for a quick response where they are needed in the state.

Locally, officials and emergency personnel from Prince George’s County held a press conference to explain their snow emergency plan. County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III said the county is ready for the storm. Most importantly he asked county residents to stay off the roads and urged patience as emergency personnel do their work.

For the City of Hyattsville, local officials and organizations are asking residents to be mindful of the following:

Remember Your Neighbors

Hyattsville Aging in Place, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping senior residents in the community, needs your help. Lisa Walker, a board member for the nonprofit, said volunteers are needed to help with snow removal. “With the amount of snow they’re predicting the snow will be heavy,” said Walker. “If you have a heart problem or other condition do not try to remove the snow on your own.”  Those who are able to volunteer can send an email to lisawalkerdc@gmail.com or call 301.887.3101.

Be Mindful Where You Park

Residents of the City of Hyattsville are asked to park their cars in their driveways. If no driveway is available then park as close to the curb as possible to allow snow plows to pass.  Those who live along county roads and must park on the street should park on the even number side of the street.  Metro garages are free until 9:30 a.m. Monday for residents who wish to get their vehicles off the street and protect them from the elements.

According to the city’s website, parking is prohibited entirely during a snow emergency on the following roads:

  • Crittenden Street
  • 40th Avenue
  • 40th Place
  • 42nd Avenue
  • Hamilton Street
  • Jefferson Street
  • Queensbury Road
  • Wells Parkway

The Streets Will Be Plowed

County officials have already started to treat streets, however they urge residents to stay off the roads to allow them to properly clear the streets. Street plowing is expected to start 24 hours after the snow has ended. Major roads will be the first priority followed by streets in residential areas.

Emergency Contact Numbers

The City of Hyattsville’s emergency teams will be working around the clock throughout the storm. For immediate assistance, call 911 or the Hyattsville Police direct emergency number at 301.985.5050.

Here are additional emergency numbers to keep on hand:

  • 24-hour Emergency line for Prince George’s County – 301.499.8608.
  • Pepco – 877.737.2662
  • BGE – 800.685.0123
