BY KRISSI HUMBARD — The Hyattsville Police Department is starting a new teen club for the summer.

“Teens need somewhere safe and fun to go, and this is going to be the place,” said Sgt. Suzie Johnson.

The Magruder Park Teen Club is open to teens ages 13-18 who live in Hyattsville and the surrounding area or who attend Northwestern High School. The free club will be held at the Magruder Park Rec Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. HCPD will plan a special event one Saturday a month.

Johnson said she is in need of donations “to make this successful for our teens.” Some things she is looking for are: a microwave oven with a popcorn button; a flat screen, smart TV for movie nights; kickballs; a foosball table; volleyballs; flag football supplies; money or anything else residents are willing to donate. To donate, contact HCPD at 301-985-5060.

“I am hoping that we can provide a safe place for our teens to hang out, instead of on the streets,” Johnson said.

An open house and registration at the Magruder Park Rec Center will be held on June 19, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
